We acknowledge the issues surrounding single use plastics, climate change and the impact that products in our category range may have on the environment. Foodservice consumers are increasingly interested in the green credentials of products and packaging for front and back of house. The demonization of plastics is a huge problem, and often the benefits plastics provide are overlooked due to the best of intentions. What are we replacing plastics with, and what is the environmental impact of adopting alternatives to ensure what we do develop in the future is green and sustainable?
Globally, a balance needs to be found between keeping the benefits that plastics can bring, such as helping to reduce food waste and protecting flavour, against the benefits of removing plastics. A circular solution needs to be developed and implemented so plastic can be reused and not found as litter in our environment.
Banning all plastic packaging and single use plastic doesn’t solve the problem, in some respects it makes the problem worse. The biggest issue is plastic ending up in our rivers, seas and oceans, harming the environment or in landfill where it has no value.
Plastic packaging, such as cling film, has many positive benefits. It protects food against damage, preserves flavour, helps to extend shelf life and therefore prevents food waste. Plastic has safety and food hygiene benefits too, such as protecting food from cross-contamination or pathogens. Plastic packaging is used in the food supply chain to support safe and hygienic distribution of food and to minimise food waste by keeping the food fresher for longer conserving valuable resources involved from farm to shelf.
The way to stop plastics entering rivers, seas and oceans or ending up in landfill is to recycle, reduce and reuse plastics. Recycling, reducing and reusing plastics moves away from the conventional linear use of plastic, which is manufactured and then thrown away, to the circular use of plastic which keeps plastic in use where it has value.

Our mission is to become 100% Circular by 2025. This includes using recyclable or renewable input material, developing products which can be recycled or degradable at the end of life, creating reusable solutions and promoting waste avoidance.
Plastic is a unique and great material, it has a lot of uses and provides properties that, currently, other materials cannot deliver. However, incorrect usage and disposal of plastics causes massive environmental problems and we acknowledge that this cannot be ignored.
We think the whole life of our products should be circular, we want both our raw materials at the start of the journey and our products at the end of their life to be recycled or composted.
We fully and actively embrace our 100% circular strategy and understand that going circular is a long journey, but it is the right and only way forward.
We are aware that we are part of the problem, but we will be part of the solution. We will and have to invest substantially into our 100% circular strategy in the course of the following years.
By 2025, we will use only recycled or renewable materials for our products and packaging. The prerequisite is the necessary technologies being available to us. We will be the active driver of sustainability developments in all of our product categories.
By 2025, we will sell only products and packaging that can either be recycled or are biodegradable or compostable. We are already committed to ensuring our products and packaging are integrated into the circular economy, wherever possible.
By 2025, we will expand our product range to include multi-use products. In the development of these, we will place special emphasis on sustainability and ease of use.
In our production processes, we continue to reduce our usage of resources while maintaining our high-quality standards. We will continue to support consumers in avoiding food waste with, among other things, products that prolong significantly the freshness of food.
Our approach to plastic products and packaging is guided by the ‘New Plastics Economy Commitment’ of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation* We want to achieve the following by 2025:
• Increase the proportion of high-quality recycled materials
• Raise the proportion of recyclable products and packaging
• Develop plastics which decompose within an eco-friendly length of time
• Expand our range of reusable products and packaging
• Make proactive contributions to developing and implementing a high-performance circular economy system for plastics
